The susceptibility of the intimate area

In the vagina of a healthy woman there are numerous bacteria of the genus Lactobacillus (Lactobacillus acidophilus, L. Fermentum, L. Plantarum, L. Brevis, L. casei).

These are non-pathogenic bacteria responsible for producing lactic acid which, by significantly reducing the pH of the vaginal microbial flora, effectively inhibit the proliferation of other pathogenic microorganisms (bacteria and fungi).

The natural pH of a healthy woman’s vagina (it varies between 3.8 and 4.5) can be increased as a result of many factors that can result in the growth of microorganisms and the occurrence of inflammation.

The most crucial factors that increase susceptibility to infections in the female intimate and genital area include:

  • Systemic diseases (diabetes, uremia, vitamin A and B deficiency, iron deficiency),
  • Oestrogen deficiency, excessive obesity),
  • Treatment with antibiotics and steroids,
  • Use of oral contraceptives,
  • Use of unsuitable washing products with a high alkaline pH (e.g. soap),
  • Mechanical factors that cause abrasions, damage and sores in the pubic area (sanitary towels, tampons, underwear made of very tight synthetic fibers).

Increased susceptibility to infections can also occur:

  • During menstruation (blood has a much higher pH than the vagina’s natural environment and alters the acid-alkaline balance of the intimate area, weakening the natural defense mechanisms. When in the vagina and perineum, blood is a factor in the proliferation of bacteria.
  • During pregnancy (increase in pH due to hormonal changes),
  • During increased sexual activity (the pH of semen is significantly higher than the pH of the vagina and varies between 7.2 and 7.8).

The female intimate area is vulnerable to both fungal and bacterial infections.

Infections may not cause symptoms, but they are often accompanied by unpleasant itching, burning, pain in the vagina and vulva, vaginal discharge of various characteristics, abrasions, erythema.

How to take care of the intimate area?

One of the ways to keep the intimate area in good condition is proper hygiene, especially by avoiding wearing tight underwear made of synthetic fibers and avoiding the use of irritants such as soaps.

It is recommended to use special products dedicated to hygiene and care, with a compatible pH and which do not alter the natural acid-alkaline balance of the intimate area.

How to avoid bad odor?

Vaginal discharge with an odor is often associated with infections (e.g. bacterial vaginosis, vulvar ulceration (infectious ulcerations such as herpes), pelvic inflammatory disease, hidradenitis suppurativa) or non-infectious (e.g. excessive sweating, urinary or fecal incontinence, poor hygiene) causes of vaginitis or vulvar disease.

Washing the intimate area as a routine is desirable and recommended to prevent the accumulation of vaginal discharge, sweat, urine and fecal contamination and thus avoid unpleasant body odor. However, the intimate washing product must be compatible with the pH of the vagina, otherwise it could lead to an imbalance in the protective flora of the intimate area and cause irritation or infection.
